My last post dove into the wonders of water, that life-giving essence that flows through us all. If water is the river of life, then food is the fertile soil that nourishes our roots. As a naturopath, I’m thrilled to share how food can be your greatest medicine, a vibrant gift from the Earth that heals and uplifts. Let’s explore how what we eat shapes our health, guided by the timeless wisdom of naturopathic principles.

ANCESTRAL WISDOM AND FOOD

Our ancestors understood food as medicine, their knowledge woven into the land they stewarded. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples of Australia viewed food as sacred, deeply tied to Country. They used bush foods like kangaroo, rich in protein and iron, for strength, and native plants like wattleseed or quandong, packed with antioxidants, to heal ailments from colds to inflammation. Their practices, guided by seasonal cycles and Dreamtime stories, honored the land’s rhythms, ensuring balance between body and spirit.

In South America, Indigenous peoples of the Amazon and Andes held food as a bridge to the divine. Amazonian tribes used cacao, revered as a heart-opening medicine, to boost energy and clarity, while Andean communities cultivated quinoa, a nutrient-dense grain, to sustain vitality at high altitudes. Plants like maca root were prized for balancing hormones and enhancing resilience. These traditions, rooted in reciprocity with the Earth, saw food as a living ally in healing.

These wisdoms remind us that food is a bridge to the Earth. I ask the question, once again, what did your ancestors eat? Perhaps your great-grandmother simmered bone broth for days, or your lineage grew maize under the sun. Reconnecting with these foods grounds us.
